Voter Roll Revision : Claims, Objections, Deadline Extended to Jan 30

New Delhi:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for filing claims and objections in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat till January 30, 2026.

The extension follows an order of the Supreme Court, which, while hearing a writ petition on January 15, advised the Commission to consider extending the period for filing claims and objections. Acting on this, and on requests from the Chief Electoral Officers of the concerned States, the ECI decided to grant additional time.

In Kerala, the draft electoral rolls were published on December 23, 2025, and the original period for filing claims and objections was fixed from December 23, 2025 to January 22, 2026. With the latest decision, the deadline now stands extended up to January 30, 2026.

Similarly, in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, where the draft rolls were published on December 19, 2025, the claims and objections period, originally scheduled to end on January 18, 2026, has also been extended to January 30, 2026.

The revision is being carried out with January 1, 2026 as the qualifying date. The Commission said the extension was granted in exercise of the powers conferred under Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, keeping in view the Supreme Court’s observations and other relevant factors.

The ECI has urged eligible voters to make use of the extended period to ensure that their names are correctly included in the electoral rolls and that errors, if any, are rectified.
